KBC GEM CHAMPION – No Step Too Far: Wilma Rudolph
Wilma was born prematurely in 1940, the 20th of 22 children in her family. She faced many serious health issues and suffered from polio as an infant. Her mother was told by doctors that she would never walk.
“My doctors told me I would never walk again,” Wilma once said. “My mother told me I would. I believed my mother.” She fought and struggled all her young life to simply walk. Then one Sunday morning at church, Wilma defiantly detached her hated metal braces and boldly walked down the aisle to the preacher. And she never looked back!
She eventually led her high school basketball team to the state championship and was invited to attend a track camp at Tennessee State University. At 16, she went to the 1956 Olympic Games, where she won a Bronze Medal as part of a relay team. In 1960, at the Olympics in Rome, Wilma became the first African American woman to receive three Olympic Gold Medals in track and field.
Wilma Rudolph was a CHAMPION because she had the determination and perseverance to see beyond her challenges and achieve her dreams.
